- Background Studio is a browser-based image tool that separates the main subject of a photo from its background, so you can create a transparent PNG or place the subject on a new background.
- How does background removal work?
- A small open-source segmentation model (U²-Net) runs inside your browser using WebAssembly, or WebGPU when your browser supports it. It predicts which pixels belong to the subject and turns the rest transparent.
- Does Background Studio upload my image?
- No. The image is read directly by your browser and processed on your device. Only the model file itself is downloaded from our asset host the first time you use the tool — your photo is never sent anywhere.
- Can I change the background after removing it?
- Yes. You can pick a solid colour, a gradient, one of the built-in scenes, a custom colour, or upload your own background image.
- Can I make the background transparent?
- Yes. Keep the Transparent option selected and download as PNG, which preserves transparency.
- Can I upload my own background?
- Yes, JPG, PNG or WebP. Like your photo, the background stays on your device.
- Which image formats are supported?
